Microspikes / Trail Traction Devices
Overview
Microspikes are lightweight traction devices worn over footwear to improve grip on snow, ice, or frozen ground. They provide stability during shoulder seasons and early-morning travel.
Key points
- Made with metal chains and small spikes for added traction.
- Used for icy trails, compacted snow, and low-angle slopes.
- Lighter and less technical than crampons.
- Compatible with most hiking shoes and boots.
- Require careful placement on footwear to maintain stability.
Details
Microspikes attach to the sole of hiking footwear using an elastomer harness and metal chain system. Hikers use them during freeze–thaw cycles or in early-season snowpack where traction is insufficient for bare footwear but does not require mountaineering equipment.
Although versatile, they are not suitable for steep alpine ice, mixed climbing, or technical mountaineering. Regular inspection of chains and elastomer components ensures reliability throughout the season.
